Marrakech, Atlas Mountains, Casablanca & Essaouira - A Moroccan Adventure -May-June 2025

The Beginning When I asked the husband what he wanted for his birthday and he said to go to Marrakech, I initially thought, ‘ouch, that’s not somewhere I’d want to go in the warmer months’, but as it was on my travel list for this year anyway I thought, ‘why not’. I have braved hotter temperatures in my pursuit of world travel! This was booked about three weeks prior to travel and was a decent deal for a 5 star resort - even the travel agent was surprised. I often check back often after I’ve booked a holiday to gauge (as much as it can be gauged) how holiday prices fluctuate. Within 5 days of the booking the price had risen considerably and was more than double by the time we flew out. Anyway, if you want personal advice on how to get favourable holiday deals, get in touch with me directly. While the husband is very happy to relax at a resort, I’m all ‘go’ when away (hence the blog name) so there had to be a degree of compromise - his birthday holiday combined with my pre-planned Moroc...

A Latvian Escape (Riga Jan 2025)

So Riga. For a few years I’ve wanted to go and explore the famous Christmas markets in this city but it’s never worked out. What I mean is, I’ve never actually set aside the time to do it. So, straight on the back of my last three months of travel (Oct - Istanbul, Nov - New York, Dec - Caribbean cruise), I decided to grasp the opportunity and go for three nights. I wanted to start the year with a trip that: didn’t cost too much, allowed me to tick a new country off the map and I could comfortably explore in four days.  I booked flights and the hotel with BA - usually best as you get checked bags included. Not that I absolutely needed to check a bag, but hey, if it’s on offer, it saves pulling your case around the airport. The hotel only charged an extra £30 single supplement which was great. One of the disadvantages of solo travel is the extra you have to pay for single occupancy, which can sometimes be double so I’m always impressed when I see a reasonable price for a solo t...

Sailing the 7 seas...ok, maybe not 7 (Caribbean cruise, Dec 2024)

I saw an offer 3 months ago. I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of cruising (this being my 3rd - not counting the overnight cruise in Halong Bay Vietnam a few years ago). But what jumped out at me was one of the destinations - Jamaica. A long time ‘must visit’ on my bucket list - but let’s face it, most destinations are on my bucket list. I had been planning a 10-day trip here last year which didn’t work out. Then I noticed that I hadn’t been to any of the islands listed on this, Nieuw Amsterdam, Holland America, 14-day cruise so I jumped at the opportunity.  I hadn’t heard of the travel company, recommended by Travelzoo, but did due diligence in my checks and decided it was safe to book with them. Booking was smooth enough, a few small issues with errors and things they’d missed but easily rectified. Not so easily rectified was an occurrence about 12 hours before the flight. Despite the flights being booked via BA, it turned out the outbound flight had a codeshare with AA. Missed on...
